PADI Ice Diver Course Updated for 2015

Although Ice Diving is not part of the TecRec range of PADI courses it is of particular interest to many tec divers (as well as plenty of recreational divers, of course)Ice18

There has been a steady increase in adventure travel to destinations offering superb ice diving opportunities, so it’s no surprise that the PADI Ice Diver specialty course and associated PADI Ice Dive Instructor rating have both surged in popularity too.

To keep ahead of this growing trend, the PADI Ice Diver specialty course and related standards have been modernised and updated to reflect current theory, techniques and global environmental practices. The update also covers the latest, state-of-the-art equipment that’s available to support ice diving and allow divers to safely get the most out of this unique diving environment.

Key changes to the PADI Ice Diver specialty course include:

  • Additional requirements to become an Ice Diver Instructor, Certified Assistant or Safety Diver, placing extra emphasis on the importance of Ice Diver training in all cases.
  • The addition of Practical Applications allows greater scheduling flexibility for land (ice) based skills to help avoid excessive exposure to cold.
  • Changes in safety diver and supervision requirements for some aspects of the course ensure maximum safety and comfort throughout.
  •  Restructured dives to include the addition of a new out-of-air ascent skill and Dive Four (optional) is now specifically aimed at rescue divers to allow them to transfer their existing rescue skills to the ice diving environment.

Ice Diver IG 2014

The official release is announced in the 1st Quarter 2015 Training Bulletin.

A more detailed overview of changes can be found on the PADI Pros’ Site.
