 What is your background and current involvement in diving?

I started working as a PADI Instructor in the Netherlands and I had a small Diving Center in Zoetermeer. In 2005 I changed my life and I went to Sharm el Sheikh to work fulltime in the Diving Industry. That’s what I’m still doing. Teaching is my passion, especially now IDC’s and TecRec courses. I also go often back to the Netherlands to teach IDC’s and Instructor Specialties there.

Ik begon als PADI Instructeur in Nederland en had een klein duikcenter in Zoetermeer. In 2005 veranderde ik mijn leven, verhuisde naar Sharm el Sheikh om fulltime in de Duik Industrie te werken. En dat doe ik nu nog steeds. Lesgeven is mijn passie, voornamelijk  IDC’s en TecRec cursussen nu. I ga ik ook regelmatig terug naar Nederland om IDC’s en Instructeurs Specialties te geven.

How did you get into tec diving?

When I became Course Director in 2009 it was a logical step for me to start with TEC and Rebreather Diving. I always want to learn more, do different dives and share this with divers who are interesting in Technical and Rebreather diving.

Toen ik in 2009 Course Director werd, was dit een logische volgende stap en begon ik met TEC en Rebreather duiken. Ik wil altijd meer leren en verschillende duiken maken en dit met duikers delen die ook interesse hebben in Technisch en Rebreather duiken.

Do you have any specialised areas of interest?

When I started with Sidemount diving I loved it so much that I almost make every dive with this configuration now, also my TEC dives.

The South Sinai gives us so many options for diving. Diving the Thistlegorm, I love to do this with a Rebreather, to stay two hours underwater when others have to go up. The whole wreck is yours! The Arch of Thomas by Tiran Island is one of my favourites to go deep. I really like the variety of Technical Diving, Backmount, Sidemount and Rebreather dives. I still love the cold water dives in the Netherlands as well, if there is something nice to see.

Toen ik met Sidemount duiken begon, was ik er direct aan verknocht, zodat ik nu bijna elke duik met de Sidemount configuratie maak, ook mijn TEC duiken.

De Zuid Sinai geeft ons zoveel opties om verschillende duiken te maken. Een duik op de Thistlegorm doe ik het liefst met een rebreather om twee uur onder te blijven. Wanneer andere duikers naar boven moeten, heb je het hele wrak voor jezelf. Een van mijn favoriete duikstekken om echt diep te gaan is de Arch of Thomas bij Tiran Eiland.  Wat ik zo fantastisch vind aan technisch duiken is de variëteit, Backmount, Sidemount en Rebreather duiken. Duiken in het koude water van Nederland, waar iets moois te zien is, vind ik ook nog steeds geweldig.

What do you think the greatest challenges are in this kind of diving?

Important is to develop your experience and attitude before you go to the next level. Recognize your limits, be patience and be precise.

Belangrijk is om bij jezelf te ontdekken dat je ervaring opdoet en steeds een stap vooruit gaat voordat je naar een volgend level gaat. Ken je limieten, heb geduld, een goede instelling en wees precies.

What are the most important attributes of a tec diver for the type of diving you do?

Be a team player, manage stress, be precise, have excellent skills, learn from others, build op your experience and have respect for the sea.

Heb de juiste instelling, ga goed om met stress, wees duidelijk en precies, leer van elkaar en heb respect voor de zee.

What are the most likely mistakes a tec diver can make in your kind of diving?

When divers don’t respect their limits and want to go to fast to deep or when they are cutting corners. With rebreathers, when the diver don’t check his rebreather well and if he ignore a fail in his rebreather.

Als duikers hun limieten overschrijden en te snel te diep willen gaan of als ze stappen overslaan. Bij rebreathers, als de duiker de rebreather niet nauwkeurig checkt en een fout negeert.

How do you prepare for a demanding technical dive?

I plan the dives a day before I dive, review all steps and make sure that we have all the equipment ready for the dive. A good preparation is very important. Then I need to have a good sleep as well.

Ik plan de duiken een dag van tevoren, neem alle stappen door en ik zorg er voor dat alle uitrusting aanwezig is. Een goede voorbereiding is heel belangrijk. En dan heb ik een ook goede nachtrust nodig.

What were your best or worst tec diving experiences?

Best Tec dive: when I was on Open Circuit Tec diving with my husband on a day off, searching for Hammerheads by Jackson Outside. We found a big school Hammerheads just circling under us.

Worst Tec dive: when unexpected the current changed to the opposite way and we had to come up in the blue with big waves of two meter, it was so difficult to climb on the boat with all the Tec gear.

Mijn beste TEC duik: toen ik met mijn man tijdens een vrije dag een Tec duik, OC, bij Jackson aan de achterkant deed om hamerhaaien te spotten. Er cirkelden een hele school hamerhaaien vlak onder ons.

Mijn slechtste TEC duik: toen onverwachts de stroming 180 graden draaiden en we in het blauw met twee meter hoge golven boven kwamen. Het was enorm lastig om met al de TEC uitrusting aan boord te komen.

What influences your selection of dive gear?

Comfort and quality are the most important things.

Het meeste belangrijke is dat de uitrusting van een goede kwaliteit is en dat het goed zit.

What kind of person do you want diving in the same team as you?

A serious diver who is physically fit and a good team player.

Een serieuze duiker die gezond is en een prima team player is.

What advice would you give to someone thinking of getting into tec diving?

TEC diving is very interesting and exciting, do it step by step, it cost time and money. Invest in Tec- or Rebreather diving by a serious way, so you can enjoy it for the rest of your life. And Never stop learning, we want to be safe divers all the time.

Tec duiken is heel interessant en indrukwekkend, doe het stapje voor stapje, het kost tijd en geld. Investeer op een serieuze manier in Tec of Rebreather duiken, zodat je er de rest van je leven van kan genieten. Blijf altijd bijleren, we willen altijd veilige duikers blijven.
