Open Water Sidemount Diving in the UK

By Jeff Loflin, TecRec Instructor Trainer

Sidemount diving originated in Cave Diving. Sidemount Cave Diving is a method of gas management. Instead of carrying a redundant primary air source on the back, Sidemount utilizes the versatility of the advanced cave diver to split the typical twin cylinders and relocate them under each arm. In doing so, the cave diver minimizes direct physical contact with the cave, and is able to proceed through unusually tight passages. Sidemount Diving then progressed into Technical Open Water Diving. As well as all of the advantages gained by the cave diving application of sidemounts it offers the Tech diver:

*Safety—all valves, regulators, hoses and o-rings are in the diver’s view.

*Ease of carrying cylinders to and from the site as opposed to doubles.

*Ease of achieving diver’s trim and adjusting trim

*Ease of acquiring single tanks worldwide versus doubles

Now I have developed an accredited course (recognized by the PADI) for the application of Sidemount Diving in Recreational Open Water Diving.

A specialty course that can be undertaken by a diver with just an open water qualification

Sidemount offers the recreational diver:

*equipment configuration facilitates “spot on” buoyancy within minutes and results in a more streamline profile than a conventional gear configuration.

*can be used for all recreational, reef, wreck, and wall dives. Interested in technical diving? No need to purchase another set of equipment as your sidemount gear will carry you through these advanced levels of training

*a different approach to gear configuration which allows the diver to carry both of their tanks on all dives providing greater safety due to the volume of gas.

PADI’S NEWEST DISTINCTIVE SPECIALTY – Be one of the first to get a sidemount diver/sidemount instructor rating.

Following the recent Oceanic Seminar in the UK, I will soon be conducting a Sidemount Diver Course Sidemount Instructor Course with an Optional Tech Sidemount Component in the UK; March 14th—16th inclusive at the Vobster Quay Dive Centre in Somerset. Places are limited on the courses and we would advise that you book as soon as possible. For further details or a booking form please contact John Knight in the UK on: 01404 891819
